I’m now qualified to offer Lifecode Gx nutrigenomics (genetic) testing: what it is, why I did it and when it may be useful
An even more personalised chapter in my nutritional therapy support
Introduction
One of the things I value most in clinical practice is helping people understand why their body may be responding the way it does, rather than endlessly chasing symptoms or trying generic advice that never quite fits.
That is one of the reasons I recently completed additional training and am now qualified to offer Lifecode Gx nutrigenomics testing.
Nutrigenomics is the science of how our individual genetic variations can influence the way we respond to food, nutrients and lifestyle factors such as stress, exercise and sleep. It can help explain why one person may thrive with a particular approach while another may need something quite different.
This is an area I have been interested in for some time since doing some add on genetic testing with other lab options; it’s been invaluable in some cases and doing the Lifecode tests myself has also answered a few questions I had and impacted the way I move forward with my own health (there’s always something to learn!).
I often talk about the importance of personalised nutrition rather than one-size-fits-all approaches. Genetics can be a part of that.
What is Lifecode Gx testing?
Lifecode Gx is a UK-based nutrigenomics testing company offering practitioner-led DNA reports that explore how gene variants may influence responses to nutrition and lifestyle factors. Their reports focus on areas such as nutrient needs, metabolism, hormones, nervous system function, detoxification and more.
It looks at how your unique genetic blueprint may interact with food, nutrients and environmental factors such as stress, sleep and activity levels.
This is not about predicting your future or saying you are ‘destined’ for a particular outcome.
It is about understanding where you may have different tendencies or requirements, so my support can be more targeted and informed for you.
Why I chose to train in this area
I have worked with people who are doing a lot of the right things, yet still feel there is a missing piece.
They may be eating as well as they think they can, making lifestyle changes, but still experiencing issues such as:
fatigue
hormone symptoms
stress sensitivity
poor sleep
digestive issues
histamine-type symptoms
blood sugar swings
difficulty knowing which supplements actually suit them
Sometimes the answer lies in deeper clinical work, other functional testing or lifestyle patterns.
Sometimes genetics can provide another useful layer of insight.
I also wanted to ensure that if I offered this kind of testing, it was through a robust framework with proper training and interpretation, rather than the type of direct-to-consumer DNA kits that can often create confusion without context or adequate support.
What can Lifecode Gx testing offer?
Depending on the report chosen, Lifecode Gx testing may help identify areas such as:
how you may process certain vitamins and nutrients
tendencies around blood sugar balance, appetite or fat metabolism
hormone metabolism, including oestrogen pathways
detoxification and chemical sensitivity pathways
methylation-related processes
histamine breakdown pathways
nervous system tendencies linked to stress or neurotransmitter balance
APOE-related insights in specific cases - this can relate to cardiovascular health as well as other areas
Reports and my ongoing support are designed to translate gene findings into practical nutrition and lifestyle recommendations, rather than just raw data.
When might it be appropriate?
This type of testing is not necessary for everyone.
Many people can make excellent progress with foundational nutrition, lifestyle and standard clinical support alone.
However, it may be worth considering when:
you feel you have tried many sensible approaches with limited progress
symptoms keep recurring without a clear explanation
you react strongly to certain supplements or foods
hormone transitions such as perimenopause or menopause feel complex
stress resilience feels unusually low
you want a more personalised strategy rather than guesswork
you enjoy data and want to understand your body in more depth
It can also be useful for those who want to refine an already good health plan.
What it isn’t
Lifecode Gx testing is not:
a diagnosis tool
a substitute for medical care
a guarantee of outcomes
a reason to feel ‘broken’ or fated, because of a gene variant
a rationale to focus on just the genetics and ignore fundamentals like sleep, food quality, movement and stress management
Genes load the gun, environment often pulls the trigger and nutritional therapy with the right plan can soften the impact.
How the process works
Testing is completed using a simple cheek swab at home. The sample is then analysed and the reports are produced, usually within a couple of weeks. Additional reports can often be added within a set timeframe using the same sample.
I then interpret the findings with you and translate them into realistic, personalised actions.
My approach
I am not interested in overwhelming people with lots of jargon or creating anxiety around health.
My approach is always:
practical
evidence-informed
kind
realistic for real life
Testing should always serve you and add to our work together. I make sure that everything is laid out simply and carefully, without overwhelm.
